How many copies will GTA 6 sell? 48 million, from Reddit

Nobody knows, including the company holding the pre-order file. The number circulating this week is 48 million copies at launch, from a Piper Sandler note reported on 11 September, and it is worth understanding what that number is before you repeat it: a multiple applied to how many people visit a subreddit.

That is not a criticism of the analyst, who is explicit about his method. It is a description of the state of the evidence. Sixty-six days out from 19 November, the most quoted forecast for the biggest entertainment launch ever attempted rests on r/GTA6 traffic — and the only organisation that can see real pre-order demand has said in public that it cannot tell what its own numbers mean.

What is on the table

Every figure below is an estimate by someone outside Rockstar. Rockstar and Take-Two have published none.

For scale, Grand Theft Auto V sold 11.21 million units in its first 24 hours in 2013 — the figure Guinness World Records certified — and booked $1 billion in three days. The analyst rows above are three to four times that, on windows running from launch day to a full fiscal year. The forum poll is the only entry that puts VI in the same order of magnitude as V’s own record, which tells you something about how far the professional estimates have travelled from the last observed data point.

How you get to 48 million

Piper Sandler’s model is a proxy model, and an unusually legible one. It takes weekly visitor counts for a game’s subreddit, and multiplies.

The June note, as reported by Wccftech, ran two versions across a sample of roughly fifteen game launches. Assume r/GTA6 reaches about 1.3 million weekly visitors by launch and apply a median multiplier of roughly 35×: about 46 million units. Or take the subreddit’s then-current 870,000 and apply the 53× median from the five-months-out sample: about 46 million again. Two roads, one number, so 46 million became the estimate. The reported correlation between subreddit traffic and launch sales was around 94% for the launch-time sample and 73% five months out.

Then the input moved. Per Callahan’s September note, r/GTA6 weekly actives roughly doubled from 700,000 in mid-August to 1.4 million after the late-August leaks, reached 2.0 million after the Extended Look, and added another 35% to around 2.7 million in the week that followed. Nearly four times the mid-August level in under a month.

The new estimate is 48 million.

The multiple absorbed the news

Look at what had to happen for that to be true. In June the model assumed 1.3 million weekly visitors at launch. By early September the subreddit was at 2.7 million, and Callahan now expects 3.0 million at launch — 131% above the figure the June forecast was built on. The output went from 46 million to 48.3 million, a rise of 5%. The reconciliation is the multiplier, cut from 35.5× to 16×, a reduction of 55%.

There is a respectable reason for that. Multiplier efficiency falls as a subreddit gets huge, because the marginal member is more casual, and Callahan says so — he notes that 16× would put GTA VI in the bottom five of his entire sample on that measure, and treats the choice as deliberately conservative. He is lowering the multiple precisely so that a surge in the input does not run away with the answer.

But the consequence is worth stating plainly, because none of the coverage does. The forecast has been stable through a near-quadrupling of the thing it measures. A model whose free parameter moves to cancel the news is not tracking the news. It is expressing a prior about how many copies Grand Theft Auto sells, and the subreddit is decoration on top of it. That may well be the right prior. It is not a measurement.

We run a different meter

Our collector samples every live Grand Theft Auto stream on Kick, Twitch and YouTube once a minute and has done continuously since July. It is also an engagement proxy, and it covers exactly the weeks in Callahan’s chain. It does not agree with Reddit’s.

Two engagement meters for the same franchise, four weeks, both indexed to mid-August r/GTA6 weekly actives (Piper Sandler, reported) against mean concurrent live GTA viewers on Kick, Twitch and YouTube (luciastream) 0.0× 1.0× 2.0× 3.0× 4.0× 1.00× 700K 1.00× 239,022 16–22 Aug 2.00× 1.4M 1.01× 242,162 23–29 Aug 2.86× 2.0M 0.99× 237,404 30 Aug – 5 Sep 3.86× 2.7M 1.31× 312,706 6–12 Sep r/GTA6 weekly actives Live GTA viewers, weekly mean
Our figures are means of hourly readings over four complete seven-day windows, 16 August – 12 September 2026 UTC. Subreddit figures are as reported in Piper Sandler's note; aligning its three steps to calendar weeks is our reading of the sequence, since the note gives events rather than dates.
Week (UTC) r/GTA6 weekly actives vs mid-Aug Live GTA viewers, weekly mean vs mid-Aug
16–22 Aug ~700,000 1.00× 239,022 1.00×
23–29 Aug ~1,400,000 2.00× 242,162 1.01×
30 Aug – 5 Sep ~2,000,000 2.86× 237,404 0.99×
6–12 Sep ~2,700,000 3.86× 312,706 1.31×

Across the first three of those weeks the number of people actually watching Grand Theft Auto never moved more than 1.3% from where it started, and finished slightly below it, while the subreddit measure tripled. Our meter did break out in the fourth week, and we know why, because we wrote it down at the time: NoPixel V opened in closed beta on 8 September, and daily means went from 242,982 across 1–7 September to 342,045 across 8–13 September, a step of 40.8%. That is a roleplay server on GTA V. It has nothing to do with GTA VI, and anyone reading our line as evidence of launch anticipation would be making the same category error this post is about.

The Extended Look is the cleanest test

The single largest catalyst in the chain is the Extended Look on 27 August, and it is the one event where several independent meters exist.

On Netflix it reached 31.1 million views and was the most-watched title on the platform that week, number one in 87 of 93 countries. Ampere Analysis, reported by Kotaku on 10 September, put more than 100,000 US sign-ups on the six-hour exclusivity window, with over 5% of viewers reactivating a subscription dormant for 30 days or more. On Callahan’s meter it took r/GTA6 from 1.4 to 2.0 million.

On ours it produced the largest live Grand Theft Auto audience ever recorded — 992,344 concurrent viewers at 19:21 UTC, which is still the all-time peak in our data eighteen days later, and which we measured minute by minute as it happened.

And then it went away. The daily mean for 27 August was 268,342 against 237,798 for the other six days of that week: +12.8% on the day, +1.3% on the week. Three hours cleared half a million and the rest of the week looked like every other week.

That is the honest shape of the thing. The same event is transformational on one meter, historic-but-brief on a second, and invisible on a third. Which of them predicts units is an open question, and the answer is not “whichever one went up the most”.

What our meter cannot see

We would be doing exactly what we are criticising if we left this out.

We measure people watching a game that is already out. There is no GTA VI to watch, so almost everything in our numbers is GTA V — roleplay, freeroam, the occasional heist. A person who pre-ordered VI in June and has been reading r/GTA6 every day since has no way to appear in our data at all. Our meter is structurally poor at detecting anticipation, and we are not claiming otherwise. The point is narrower and it holds: “GTA engagement has quadrupled” is not a fact about Grand Theft Auto. It is a fact about one English-language forum.

And the forum is English-language. Grouping the top hundred creators by thirty-day hours watched this morning, Arabic is 49.6% of that total on 28 channels, against English’s 20.3% on 29. The largest identifiable block of GTA viewing on earth is a Kick audience that has no obvious reason to ever visit r/GTA6, and it is not a small correction. A multiplier calibrated on games with English-centred communities has to absorb that difference silently. It may do so fine. Nobody has shown that it does.

Concurrent viewers are not people, and they are not buyers. Our figures count simultaneous streams open, not unique humans and certainly not wallets.

Where things stood this morning

For the record, and so a future version of this page has something to be graded against. Seventeen complete censuses between 04:04:35 and 04:20:34 UTC on 14 September 2026, each one the top-400 board plus the tail file, with timestamps matched across all three files, viewer sums reconciling exactly to summary.json in all seventeen, zero duplicate channel pairs and no degraded platforms at any point.

Platform Viewers Share Channels
Twitch 121,009 51.0% 1,397
Kick 110,425 46.5% 280
YouTube 5,796 2.4% 99
All three 237,231 100% 1,776

Viewer totals ran 232,183 to 248,795 across the window and the smallest channel on the board was 30 viewers, so the long tail below it is included rather than cut off. Today’s peak so far is 382,312 at 01:28 UTC; the record is still 27 August’s 992,344.

What this does not show: it is seventeen minutes of one morning. Yesterday alone the hourly total ran from 134,239 to 729,972, so read the table as a level and not as a day — and note that Twitch is ahead of Kick in it, which is not how most hours of most days in our record look. One census is a reading.

When you will actually know

Not soon, and not from the obvious places.

Take-Two’s annual meeting of stockholders is 17 September, virtual and audio-only. It is a governance meeting — director elections, an advisory vote on executive pay, ratifying the auditor — and nothing on the agenda produces a sales number. Pre-load opens 12 November; the game launches 19 November on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, which is all rockstargames.com/VI commits to, checked this morning, where the string “PC” still appears zero times.

Even after launch the answer arrives sideways. Take-Two reports net bookings in dollars, not units, so the first post-launch quarterly will require the same inference it required for pre-orders. Its FY2027 guidance of $8.0–8.2 billion, set in May and left unchanged in August, is the only company-issued number that bears on the question at all — and JPMorgan read it as implying unit sales in the mid-30 millions, well under Callahan’s 48.

The best statement of the problem came from the one person with the real data. Asked by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier why Take-Two will not simply publish the pre-order count, Strauss Zelnick said the volume is so far outside precedent that the company “can’t tell whether they mean anything” — that the demand “could reflect a pull forward of sales that otherwise would materialize in the fullness of time”, that they “simply don’t know the demand curve because it’s just never happened before”, and that the raw numbers “could potentially be misleading”, as reported by PC Gamer on 12 August.

A company that can see how many people have actually paid says it cannot convert that into a sales estimate. It is worth holding that next to a figure derived from subreddit visitors, and it is the reason the honest answer to the headline is still: nobody knows, and 48 million is one model’s opinion wearing a measurement’s clothes.

Sourcing

Confirmed, from the primary source and re-read this morning: the 19 November release date and the PS5 / Xbox Series X|S platform list, on rockstargames.com/VI. The 12 November pre-load date is Take-Two’s own pre-order release of 24 June.

Reported, not confirmed — everything else, and the distinction matters here more than usual. Every analyst figure in this piece is second-hand: we have not seen Piper Sandler’s notes and have taken both of them from Wccftech’s coverage, and the Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan and Aldora figures come from Sherwood News’s write-up of Take-Two’s May guidance. The Ampere Netflix figures reach us through Kotaku and GamesIndustry. The Zelnick quotes are PC Gamer’s account of his Bloomberg interview with Jason Schreier. GTA V’s 11.21 million first-day units are widely reported as a Guinness World Records certification; we have not seen the certificate. Take-Two’s FY2027 guidance and the 17 September meeting date are in its filings, read here through press coverage rather than the documents.

Unconfirmed: what Grand Theft Auto VI will actually sell, by anyone.
