How to watch the GTA 6 Extended Look without Netflix

You don’t need a subscription. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look goes up free on the Rockstar Games YouTube channel and on the Grand Theft Auto VI site at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday 27 August — that is 01:00 UTC on Friday the 28th. Netflix subscribers get the same thing six hours earlier, at 3 p.m. ET.

That is Rockstar’s own wording, not an inference. The Newswire post says the Extended Look “will premiere on Netflix Thursday, August 27 at 3 p.m. ET and will also launch on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI site at 9 p.m. ET on August 27.” Two platforms, one paywall, six hours between them.

Why half the internet thinks it’s Netflix-only

Because the two announcements do not say the same thing, and both went out on 6 August.

Netflix published its version on Tudum at 12:06 UTC under the headline “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look is Premiering Exclusively on Netflix”, and the body — “Netflix members get an early look at the hotly anticipated game Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. ET” — never mentions the free release six hours later. Rockstar’s post, out the same day, lists both. Neither is wrong about the ground it covers. Read side by side they produce exactly the confusion you would expect, and it is why “do I need Netflix for this” is the question people are actually typing.

Netflix’s framing is at least honest about what it is buying. “Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right,” said Brandon Riegg, the company’s VP of Nonfiction Series, in the Tudum post. “We’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first.” Members first — not members only.

When it lands where you are

Both times, converted. The free release crosses midnight UTC, so for most of Europe, Asia and Australia it is the following morning.

What nobody has actually confirmed

Four things are circulating as fact and are not.

How long it is. Neither Rockstar nor Netflix has given a runtime. VGC checked and found none stated. The “around 30 minutes” figure in circulation traces to reporting, not to either company.

Whether it contains gameplay. Rockstar has not said so. The word used is “extended look”, and the two trailers released so far — December 2023 and May 2025 — contained no gameplay footage. A 30-minute cinematic and a 30-minute gameplay walkthrough are very different products and only one of them has been announced.

Whether creators can cover it. Journalist Steve Vegvari reported that a Netflix representative said creators are welcome to cover the Extended Look — reactions, breakdowns, analysis. That is a reported statement rather than a published policy, and “cover it” is not obviously the same permission as rebroadcasting the Netflix premiere in full while it airs. If you are a creator planning a stream, the 9 p.m. ET version is the one with no ambiguity attached to it.

That anything about the launch has changed. It has not. rockstargames.com/VI still reads “Coming November 19, 2026” against PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version announced — the same position that rules out roleplay servers at launch.

The part we can measure: who is awake at each time

Here is where we can add something the rest of the coverage cannot. We sample every live Grand Theft Auto stream on Kick, Twitch and YouTube once a minute, so we know how many people are watching GTA at any given hour — which is a reasonable proxy for how many are around to react when Rockstar drops something.

Averaged across 205 hourly samples between 15:00 UTC on 29 July and 04:00 UTC on 7 August 2026:

0 100k 200k 300k 400k Netflix 3pm ET 317,212 free 9pm ET 333,644 daily peak 396,819 12 15 18 21 00 03 06 09 Mean live GTA viewers by hour of day, 29 Jul – 7 Aug 2026 Hour of day, UTC (12:00 through 11:00). Kick + Twitch + YouTube, 205 hourly samples.

Hour (UTC) In ET Mean live GTA viewers Samples
19:00 — Netflix premiere 3 p.m. 317,212 9
21:00 — busiest hour of the day 5 p.m. 396,819 8
01:00 — free on YouTube 9 p.m. 333,644 9
09:00 — quietest hour of the day 5 a.m. 106,619 8

The six-hour wait costs the free version nothing. There are on average 5.2% more people already watching GTA at 01:00 UTC than at 19:00 UTC — 333,644 against 317,212 — so the audience that arrives late arrives to a slightly fuller room. The genuinely interesting bit is that neither time is the top of the market: GTA’s live audience peaks at 21:00 UTC, 5 p.m. Eastern, right in the gap between the two releases, and at that hour it is 25% bigger than it is when Netflix goes live.

Whether that was deliberate is not something our data can tell you. Rockstar scheduling around US primetime television rather than around live-streaming concurrency is the more obvious explanation, and 9 p.m. Eastern is a broadcast slot, not a Twitch one.

Where that audience sits matters too. At 04:07:40 UTC on 7 August 2026, with 3,630 channels live and 243,768 viewers between them:

Platform Channels live Viewers Share
Kick 303 191,103 78.4%
Twitch 3,197 42,549 17.5%
YouTube 130 10,116 4.1%
All three 3,630 243,768 100%

Three hundred and three Kick channels held more than three quarters of everyone watching GTA at that instant; 3,197 Twitch channels held under a fifth. If you want to know where the reaction to this thing will actually be watched, that is the shape of it — though the balance shifts through the day, and you can see it move on the live dashboard.

One more thing the balance points at. In that same census, Portuguese was the largest single language by viewers — 83,908, ahead of English on 69,154 and Spanish on 54,978 — and 9 p.m. Eastern is 10 p.m. in São Paulo. The delayed free release lands squarely in Brazilian primetime; the Netflix window lands at four in the afternoon.

What this does not show. These are people watching GTA streams, not people watching the Extended Look, and we cannot see Netflix at all — no third party can. The hourly means come from an 8.5-day window, which is long enough to show the daily shape and too short to say anything about a Thursday specifically. Our language split moves substantially with the clock: the same measurement taken at 08:33 UTC the previous day had English first on 47,218 and Portuguese third on 14,222, so treat the Portuguese figure as a fact about 04:07 UTC rather than about the day. Channel discovery is also still widening week over week, which means our totals grow partly because we keep finding channels we had missed.

What to do on the day

Watch it free at 9 p.m. ET on Rockstar’s YouTube channel or at rockstargames.com/VI. If you already pay for Netflix, there is no reason not to take the earlier slot. If you don’t, six hours is the entire cost of not subscribing, and the file that appears at 9 p.m. is the same one.

We will be sampling straight through both. The 24-hour baseline we published yesterday is what any spike on 27 August gets measured against, and the leaderboard shows which channels are carrying the audience while it happens.
