Will GTA 6 have mods? Not without a PC
10 min read

No — not on 19 November, and not until a PC version exists.
That is a shorter answer than page one will give you, and the reason is not that Rockstar has ruled mods out. Rockstar has said nothing at all about modding Grand Theft Auto VI. The thing that decides it is the platform list: the game ships on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and nothing else. We loaded rockstargames.com/VI at 04:12 UTC this morning rather than trusting memory. No PC version is listed. None has ever been announced, anywhere.
Mods need a PC because mods need the file system — the ability to replace an asset, inject a script, or run an unsigned executable alongside the game. No Grand Theft Auto has ever shipped that on a console, and consoles do not let players run unsigned code in the first place. So the honest form of this question is not “will Rockstar support mods” but “when does GTA VI get a PC version”, and that is a separate question with a separate answer.
What Rockstar has actually said
| Claim | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, 19 November 2026 | Confirmed | rockstargames.com/VI, read 13 Oct |
| A single-player experience at launch | Confirmed | Take-Two, 24 June 2026 |
| Digital pre-loading opens 12 November 2026 | Confirmed | Take-Two, same release |
| A PC version | Never announced | — |
| Mod support, mod tools, or an SDK for GTA VI | Never announced | — |
| FiveM or RedM coming to GTA VI | Never announced; cfx.re said the opposite in 2023 | forum.cfx.re |
The word “mod” does appear on Rockstar’s GTA VI page. It appears twice, and both times it is a body shop: One-Eyed Willie’s, a mod shop in Lake Leonida that “specializes in off-road modifications and hand-painted automotive artistry”, unlocked with the Ultimate Edition. That is the sum total of modding content on the official site five weeks out from release.
The FiveM acquisition does not mean what the top results say it means
Search will gta 6 have mods and page one is almost entirely GTA fan-SEO
sites — gta6wizard, gta-6mods, gta6bible, gtaintel, gta6cartel, viceleaks,
gtavispot. One of the pages on it is titled “Will GTA 6 Support Mods? Everything
Confirmed”, and opens by answering “GTA 6 will support mods” under a CONFIRMED
label, adding that “the FiveM team is now building GTA 6’s official multiplayer
modding infrastructure”. Further down the same page, it says that “Rockstar has
not made official statements about GTA 6 modding tools beyond confirming the
FiveM acquisition” — which is correct, and which is also the whole of the
evidence for the headline above it. I read that page this morning so I would be
describing it rather than guessing at it.
There is no Rockstar source for mod support in GTA VI, and the one piece of evidence every page on that list reaches for says close to the opposite of what they do with it.
That evidence is real: cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, joined Rockstar Games on 11 August 2023. Rockstar bought the single most important piece of GTA modding infrastructure in existence. Here is what cfx.re wrote in its own announcement, which we read first-hand this morning:
And for those curious about what else Rockstar is working on, please understand that our partnership with Rockstar Games is focused on our FiveM and RedM platforms. So please, do not ask us about the next GTA!
Three years on, that is still the clearest thing either party has said about the scope, and we could find nothing from Rockstar or cfx.re since that widens it. FiveM’s own front page describes itself today as a set of “multiplayer-enabled modification frameworks for Grand Theft Auto V, powered by Cfx” — not for Grand Theft Auto, for V. The last public modding project the cfx.re team announced was a tool to convert FiveM and GTA V Legacy assets so they work with the Enhanced PC build of GTA V, reported by IGN in March 2025. Every visible commitment points backwards at the game that has a PC version.
Rockstar’s published position on modding is worth reading too, because it is narrower than its reputation. On 18 November 2022 Rockstar Support updated its policy to cover roleplay servers, and FiveM echoed it the next morning: servers risk enforcement for misusing Rockstar’s brand or IP, integrating real-world brands, importing characters from non-Rockstar franchises, or adding “NFTs, cryptocurrency, loot boxes, play-to-earn mechanics or microtransactions”. A permissive policy, but a conditional one — and written entirely about GTA V. Rockstar’s own support article is the primary source for it; that domain refused our requests today, so the wording above is quoted from FiveM’s own post quoting it.
How much of GTA is mods, right now
This is the part of the question nobody else is in a position to answer, so here is our measurement. We sample every live Grand Theft Auto stream on Kick, Twitch and YouTube once a minute. Content type is inferred from the stream title, and two of those types — roleplay and mods — cannot exist on a console at all. Roleplay runs on FiveM, alt:V or RAGE MP, all PC-only — and NoPixel V, the largest server on our board tonight, runs through the Rockstar Games Launcher, which is also PC. Mod showcases are PC by definition.
Across 11 censuses, one a minute from 04:13:41 to 04:25:41 UTC on 13 October 2026:
| Content | Channels | Share of channels | Viewers | Share of viewers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roleplay | 835 | 44.5% | 143,992 | 59.8% |
| Mods | 14 | 0.8% | 2,803 | 1.2% |
| Needs a PC | 849 | 45.3% | 146,795 | 61.0% |
| Everything else | 1,025 | 54.7% | 93,881 | 39.0% |
61.0% of everyone watching Grand Theft Auto tonight is watching something Grand Theft Auto VI will not be able to run on 19 November. The figure held between 60.5% and 61.3% in every one of the eleven censuses, and 14 of the twenty largest streams on the board were mod-dependent in all of them.
The platform split is the part that surprised me, and it is stable across every census in the window:
| Platform | Live viewers | Watching mod content | Channels | On mod content |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twitch | 97,396 | 83.6% | 1,417 | 47.8% |
| Kick | 133,176 | 47.0% | 392 | 39.7% |
| YouTube | 10,190 | 28.6% | 64 | 23.8% |
Twitch’s Grand Theft Auto category is not really a Grand Theft Auto category any more. 83.6% of the audience there is watching a game modified beyond what Rockstar shipped, mostly roleplay. Kick, which carries the larger audience overall, is close to an even split, because its GTA scene leans on huge freeroam channels in Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese. YouTube is the only platform of the three where most GTA viewing is of the game as sold.
The share moves, and this is where I have to be honest about it. The same measurement on 8 October read 49.8%, and on 12 October classifier roleplay alone was about 40% of live GTA. Tonight it is 61.0%. The mod-dependent audience is heavily English-language — 90.6% of it, in this window — so the share rises when North America is awake and falls when Asia and the Middle East are. The category underneath it swings just as hard: in the 24 hours to 04:00 UTC this morning, live GTA viewing ran from 63,295 at 08:25 UTC to 504,166 at 20:25 UTC, an eight-fold move in twelve hours. Anyone who tells you a single figure for this without naming an hour is quoting a clock.
What survives across every reading we have published: somewhere between two fifths and two thirds of live GTA viewing is of content that needs a PC.
What that means for 19 November
Nothing, at first. The launch will be enormous, and we have put a number on how enormous.
The interesting part is the 849 channels in the table above, which is roughly 45.3% of everybody streaming GTA tonight. Their format does not have a GTA VI version. A roleplay streamer cannot move their server, their character or their city to the sequel on launch day; neither can the mods channels. GTA V is not going anywhere underneath them — Rockstar was still shipping GTA Online content to PS4 and Xbox One in July 2026, which we wrote about in August — so the likely shape of launch month is a huge console audience appearing beside a PC audience that stays where it is, rather than one replacing the other.
We will measure it rather than guess. The useful thing about publishing the numbers above today is that they are a pre-launch baseline: if the mod-dependent share of GTA viewing is still around 61.0% at the same hour in December, the sequel took the freeroam audience and left roleplay alone, which is what the hardware predicts. If it collapses, something more interesting happened.
What this does not show
We measure watching, not playing. Every figure here is a concurrent audience on three streaming platforms. The number of people in a FiveM server at any moment is a different quantity we cannot see, and it is much larger relative to the audience on some servers than others.
Content type is inferred from the stream title, so roleplay is a floor rather than a count. A stream called “chilling with the boys” that happens to be on a roleplay server lands in freeroam. That undercount is worst in languages where creators rarely name a server, which is most of them — so the true mod-dependent share is probably higher than 61.0%, not lower.
One window, one night. The figures above are a 12-minute window at 04:1x UTC. The range we quote across 8, 12 and 13 October is the honest spread, and we have no per-hour history of the content-type mix to narrow it further.
“Needs a PC” is our framing, not Rockstar’s. We are inferring from the platform list that console-only means mod-free. If Rockstar ships something nobody expects — an official creator mode, a sanctioned asset pipeline, a cfx.re product for VI — this post is wrong and we will say so on this page.

If you are here because you want to roleplay rather than read about it, the practical version of this question is whether GTA RP is worth getting into — and the short answer there is also “yes, if you have a PC”, which is the same sentence this whole post is about.
Numbers in this post come from our own sampling — seehow we measure.
