How many people play GTA 5 in 2026? Three counts, not one
9 min read

At 04:27 UTC this morning, 190,333 people were playing Grand Theft Auto V on PC. That is not a model or an extrapolation. It is the sum of three counters that Valve and Rockstar’s own modding platform publish in public, and you can refresh all three yourself in about fifteen seconds.
| Counter | What it counts | 04:27 UTC, 18 Aug 2026 | 30-day average |
|---|---|---|---|
Steam app 271590 — GTA V Legacy |
the original 2015 PC build | 33,261 | 64,758 |
Steam app 3240220 — GTA V Enhanced |
the March 2025 PC re-release | 36,552 | 63,746 |
Steam app 2676230 — FiveM |
the roleplay mod platform, Steam launches only | 91,406 | 128,906 |
| fivem.net’s own counter | all FiveM players, every launcher | 120,520 | — |
| PC total | Legacy + Enhanced + FiveM’s own figure | 190,333 | — |
Live counts read from Steam’s public web API and from fivem.net at 04:27 UTC. Thirty-day averages are SteamCharts, a third party, read the same morning. FiveM’s Steam entry and its own counter measure overlapping populations, so the total uses the broader of the two, not both.
The number nearly every “GTA 5 player count” page quotes is the first row — around 33,000 — and it is roughly one sixth of the players who are actually countable. Not because anyone is hiding anything. Because Grand Theft Auto V on PC stopped being one product some time ago, and the counters were never merged.
Why there are two Steam entries
Rockstar shipped GTA V Enhanced to PC on 4 March 2025 as a separate Steam app rather than a patch, with a free upgrade for anyone who already owned the game. So the old build did not go away — it is still there, still played, and it still has its own live count. Neither app is wrong. Quoting one of them as the Steam figure is what is wrong, and this morning the choice moved the answer by a factor of two before FiveM entered the room at all.
The mod is the largest single count
FiveM is the framework behind essentially every GTA roleplay server, Rockstar has owned it since it acquired Cfx.re on 11 August 2023, and it requires a legitimate copy of GTA V to run — its FAQ describes validating ownership when the automatic check fails. Those players are playing Grand Theft Auto V.
They do not appear in either GTA V Steam count. FiveM launches the game through its own executable and has its own Steam entry, which is why Cfx’s own support forum tells people that FiveM hours do not count toward GTA V on Steam. The arithmetic confirms the two sets are not the same people: FiveM’s Steam count this morning was nearly three times the Legacy count on its own.
Take the calmer measure and the point survives. Over the last thirty days SteamCharts has FiveM averaging 128,906 concurrent players against 64,758 and 63,746 for the two official builds — so on a monthly average, the mod platform is running level with both versions of the game combined, and this morning it was comfortably ahead of them. Whatever Grand Theft Auto V is in 2026 on PC, half of it is a multiplayer game Rockstar did not build and now owns.
Consoles publish nothing, and consoles are most of the game
Everything above covers PC, which is the minority platform. GTA V has sold in over 230 million units across three console generations — Strauss Zelnick’s own words on Take-Two’s Q1 FY2027 earnings call on 7 August 2026 (confirmed, primary). That is units shipped and sold, not people playing, and Take-Two has never published a player figure for the game.
Sony came closest this year. A PS5 Welcome Hub widget, in beta and reported in May 2026 by Push Square, Insider Gaming and others, showed weekly player counts by country — GTA V second in the United States at 5.13 million players in a week, behind Fortnite (reported, not a standing public feed). It is regional, it is weekly uniques rather than concurrents, it is PS5 only, and there is no commitment to keep it. Microsoft publishes no per-game player count at all. Neither does the Rockstar Games Launcher.
So the honest shape of the answer: PC is countable to the player, consoles are not countable at all, and consoles are where most of those 230 million copies went. Anyone quoting a single all-platform player number is multiplying, not counting.
Where the millions in the search results come from
Search the question and page one hands you totals with a confidence nothing supports. One page ranking for the query states that “around 18.3 million players stay monthly active across PC and console as of 2026” and lists four sources at the foot — SteamDB, Take-Two earnings, Twitch, Steam Store — none of which attaches to that figure in the text. We could not find any Take-Two or Rockstar disclosure of monthly actives for GTA V, and we would be glad to be shown one.
The same page reports a live Steam count of 64,130 and an all-time peak of 295,651 — a peak that matches neither Steam app’s published record (Legacy peaked at 360,761, Enhanced at 160,737). A tracker we checked at the same time, gtatracker.gg, does it properly: it reads both GTA V app IDs, says plainly that “PlayStation and Xbox players are not included, because Sony and Microsoft do not publish live per-game player counts”, and labels its all-platform estimate as Steam divided by an assumed 25–40% share. That is the right way to publish an estimate. None of the GTA V pages we looked at, that one included, adds FiveM.
The other number you can count: who is watching
This is where we come in. We sample every live Grand Theft Auto stream on Kick, Twitch and YouTube once a minute. Across 13 complete censuses between 04:05:30 and 04:23:29 UTC on 18 August 2026 — board plus tail, timestamps matched, viewer sums reconciled to the platform totals exactly in all thirteen, no duplicate channels:
| Platform | Mean live viewers | Share | Mean live channels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kick | 109,483 | 66.5% | 303 |
| Twitch | 43,046 | 26.3% | 1,769 |
| YouTube | 11,733 | 7.2% | 81 |
| All three | 164,262 | 100% | 2,153 |
Range across the window: 155,258 to 179,580 viewers. One large Kick channel going live at 04:19 accounts for most of that spread, which tells you how much weight a single broadcaster carries at the quiet end of the day.
Here is the part that matters for anyone quoting a viewership number next to a player count. Every tracker we checked pairs its Steam figure with Twitch viewers only — 45,110 on one of them, in the same clock hour our census put Twitch at 43,046. That is a fair reading of Twitch and a 26% reading of GTA’s live audience. Two thirds of the people watching this game are on Kick, and a Twitch-only number does not see them. Our live page carries all three.
Every one of these numbers is a statement about the clock
We have 469 hourly readings spanning 19.54 days, 29 July 15:00 to 18 August 04:00 UTC. Mean live GTA viewers by hour of the UTC day:
| Trough | Peak | Swing | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hour (UTC) | 09:00 | 21:00 | — |
| Mean viewers | 89,352 | 430,991 | 4.82× |
The census above was taken at 04:00-something UTC, which is on the way down the back of that curve — roughly 40% of the daily peak. Steam’s counts move the same way for the same reason: the 30-day averages in the first table are about double what those apps were reading at 04:27. If you take one figure from this piece, take the timestamp attached to it. We wrote about why a GTA viewer number without a clock is meaningless when the swing was eight-fold in a single day, and about which hour actually pays if you are the one going live.
What this does not show
We count viewers, not players. Nothing in our data says how many people are playing Grand Theft Auto V — we can only report the counters other people publish, and check that they add up. Our own channel counts are not comparable between platforms, because Kick’s public API caps discovery at its top 100 live channels while Twitch pages far deeper; viewer totals are unaffected, which is why the table above leans on viewers. FiveM’s 120,520 is Cfx’s own published figure and we cannot audit it, and both it and Steam’s API update in steps of a minute or more rather than continuously. Smaller multiplayer frameworks exist beside FiveM and we did not count them. And the largest thing in the frame — how many people were playing on a PlayStation or an Xbox at 04:27 this morning — nobody outside Sony and Microsoft knows.
Three months from now this gets stranger, not simpler. Grand Theft Auto VI launches on 19 November on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, so the biggest launch in the medium’s history will arrive with no Steam page, no SteamDB graph and no concurrent-player number of any kind. The counters we spent this piece adding up will still be measuring the game from 2013.
