Has anyone played GTA 6? The previews were hands-off
11 min read

No. As of this morning, nobody outside Rockstar Games has publicly said they have played Grand Theft Auto VI — and the one preview event we know about did not let anyone touch it.
That distinction is about to matter a great deal. Previews from press and content creators publish today, when their embargo lifts alongside Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look — Netflix at 3 p.m. ET, the Rockstar Games YouTube channel six hours later. By tonight a lot of people will be telling you how GTA 6 plays. None of them held the controller.
What we actually know about the July event
MP1st reported on 19 August that Rockstar had run a preview in July, and was unusually specific about its shape:
We recently received word that there was a GTA VI preview event held recently for the media, but they weren’t given free access to mess around with the open world or anything like that. […] Based on what we’re told, they weren’t even able to get their hands on the game at all.
Their source was unnamed — “someone familiar with the situation” — so for a week that was a rumour with one outlet behind it. It stopped being a rumour on 26 August, when the GTA YouTuber TGG posted:
Last month I was invited to Rockstar North in Edinburgh. While there, I learned exclusive information about GTA 6. As soon as the Extended Look is out, I’m telling you everything. Tomorrow.
Read the verb. Learned exclusive information. Not played, not went hands-on, not “spent two hours with it” — the phrasing a games writer reaches for automatically when they have. Rockstar’s account replied publicly to that post, which most coverage has treated as confirmation of the preview programme; it confirms the visit happened, and it is the nearest thing to an on-the-record acknowledgement that exists. Rockstar has published nothing about a preview event on its own Newswire.
TGG is, so far, the only attendee to identify themselves. How many others went, which outlets were in the room, how long the demo ran and whether a single person was handed a controller are all still unknown, and will stay unknown until the write-ups go up this afternoon.
Why “hands-off” is not a technicality
A hands-off preview is a demo you watch someone else drive. It is a good format for showing off a city, a lighting model, a crowd system. It is a useless one for the questions people actually want answered before they spend $79.99: how the car handling feels, how heavy the aiming is, what the camera does in a tight alley, whether the frame rate holds on retail hardware when the screen fills up.
So when you read today’s previews, treat every sentence that begins “the driving feels” as an impression of watching, not of playing. That is not a slight on the writers — several of them will say so themselves — but the distinction gets sanded off in aggregation, and by tomorrow it will be gone.
It also tells you something about the schedule. If Rockstar is still running hands-off demos twelve weeks out, the first people to actually play the game are unlikely to be press or creators much before launch. We went through the precedent for that in August: Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 embargo in 2018 pinned all streaming to the earliest midnight launch, and the reported plan for GTA 6 leans toward supervised events rather than review copies going out at all.
The exception people half-remember
There is one story that comes up whenever this question is asked, and it deserves to be stated accurately rather than repeated.
In January 2026, a Ubisoft developer publicly appealed for a family member with a terminal diagnosis to be allowed to play GTA 6 early. Take-Two’s Strauss Zelnick reportedly put the family in touch with Rockstar, and the developer later posted that they had had “great news” before the posts came down. Rockstar has never commented, and no one involved has said what, if anything, was played. Reported; never confirmed. The precedent is real — in 2018 two Rockstar employees took a private Red Dead Redemption 2 demo to a fan’s house weeks before launch — which makes it plausible. It is not evidence that a playable build exists outside the studio.
The only GTA 6 gameplay the public has seen was stolen
Since mid-August, a person or group calling itself CyberLeek has published more than a dozen clips of unreleased GTA 6 footage. We are not linking them, not embedding them, and not describing what is in them.
The reason they belong in this answer at all is Rockstar’s statement of 26 August, posted to its social accounts. It is the first time the company has publicly treated the clips as genuine:
It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.
That is the whole shape of the thing. A great many people have now seen GTA 6 gameplay. Nobody outside Rockstar has played it. And in the same statement the company put its own parenthesis on how far along the build is — apologising for how long it has taken “from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay”. Nearly there is not there.
Nobody is streaming it either, and we counted
This is the part we can measure rather than source. Our collector samples every live Grand Theft Auto stream on Kick, Twitch and YouTube once a minute. Across 15 complete censuses between 04:06:41 and 04:22:40 UTC this morning, that was a mean of 1,986 live channels and 171,968 concurrent viewers — and not one of them was GTA 6.
| Platform | Mean viewers | Share | Mean channels | Viewers per channel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kick | 130,233 | 75.7% | 291 | 447.0 |
| Twitch | 31,132 | 18.1% | 1,592 | 19.6 |
| YouTube | 10,604 | 6.2% | 103 | 103.1 |
| All three | 171,968 | 100% | 1,986 | 86.6 |
Thirty-nine distinct streams mentioned GTA 6 or GTA VI in their titles at some point in that window — a mean of 35 channels at any one moment, 1.76% of all live GTA channels, holding 4,183 viewers or 2.43% of the audience. We read every one of them. They fall into three groups, and none is a fourth group.
| What the stream turned out to be | Streams | Example title |
|---|---|---|
| An older GTA, with GTA 6 in the title as anticipation | 26 | “SUBATHON GTA 5 / LIVE NON-STOP jusqu’au gameplay GTA 6 !!” |
| A countdown clock, waiting room or news reaction | 12 | “GTA 6 EXTENDED LOOK COUNTDOWN LIVE🔴 24/7” |
A different game entirely, with #gtavi in the tags |
1 | a Left 4 Dead 2 stream |
| GTA 6 being played | 0 | — |
Splitting the first two groups involves a judgement call on a handful of titles that are doing both at once, so treat 26 and 12 as approximate and the zero as exact. The largest of the thirty-nine, at a mean of 1,764 viewers, was a Brazilian YouTube channel whose title translates as “GTA 6 IS TODAY! Long gameplay and real marketing” — a preview show about footage that had not aired yet. Two Twitch streams were titled, in full, “GTA VI”, twelve weeks before there is a GTA VI to title them after.
What the whole category was actually doing, in the same window: 74.7% of viewers on free-roam, 22.3% on roleplay, 1.6% on GTA Online, and a long tail of races, heists and stunts that rounds to nothing.
What this does not show. We read titles and platform metadata; we cannot see inside a video. A stream showing leaked footage without saying so in its title would not appear in the thirty-nine, and title matching is a floor in general — a Portuguese or Arabic stream discussing the reveal without writing “GTA 6” is invisible to it. Our free-roam bucket is also the fallback bucket, so it mixes GTA V free-roam, story mode and modded PC play; we have said before that this makes it the weakest of our categories. And this is one sixteen-minute window on the steepest part of the daily curve — the total fell from 191,059 to 162,074 across it, which is normal for 04:00 UTC and is why the figures above are means rather than a single reading. Where the audience sits by hour is a separate piece.
None of that changes the zero. GTA 6 does not exist as a thing anyone can broadcast, because it does not exist as a thing anyone outside Rockstar North can start.

If you are only here for the practical bit
Anything you see today advertised as live GTA 6 gameplay is one of three things: a countdown clock, somebody playing GTA V, or stolen footage. There is no fourth option until 19 November. If you want to watch the reveal without a Netflix subscription, we wrote up both routes when the dates were announced — and if you see the YouTube view count quoted against Trailer 1’s record tonight, note that YouTube changed how it counts views on 24 August and the old record has not been restated.
The live three-platform picture is on our dashboard, and the 30-day creator ranking on the leaderboard — which is where you will be able to watch the shape of this audience change, if it changes, over the next 84 days.

04:06:41–04:22:40 UTC on 27 August 2026 — 15 complete censuses of every live
Grand Theft Auto stream on Kick, Twitch and YouTube, board and tail, with
matching publish timestamps, zero duplicate channel entries, no platform
reporting degraded coverage, and per-platform totals reconciling exactly to our
published summary in all fifteen. How the collector works and where the
classification is weakest is on our methodology page.
One thing to check us on. When the previews go up this afternoon, the number of writers who describe playing GTA 6 themselves will be zero. If even one credible outlet reports hands-on time, this post is wrong in its central claim and we will say so here rather than quietly editing it.
Numbers in this post come from our own sampling — seehow we measure.
